Reproductive Health Matters - Hormonal contraception and risk of HIV acquisition: Uganda and Zimbabwe
This study among 6,109 HIV-negative women recruited from family planning clinics who were using either Depo Provera or combined oral contraception in Uganda and Zimbabwe tested the women quarterly for HIV over 15-24 months. 213 women became HIV positive during the study. Neither hormonal contraceptive method was associated with risk of HIV acquisition overall, including among women with cervical or vaginal infections. (1)
